Sinus Surgery Q & A
What are the sinuses?
Sinuses are bony air-filled spaces around the eyes and cheeks. The sinuses make mucus to clean out allergens and irritants.
What causes a sinus infection?Sinus infections are caused by many conditions. Common causes include bacteria, viruses, and fungus. When a patient has nasal allergies or anatomic abnormalities, he/she may be more prone to getting a sinus infection. When a patient gets multiple sinus infections, he/she may be a candidate for a sinus surgery.
How do you perform sinus surgery?
A computed tomography (CT) scan is done of the sinuses to evaluate the underlying anatomy and sinus disease. For revision procedures, nasal polyps, or complex anatomy, a special CT scan may be obtained that allows Dr. Archer to perform sinus surgery with 3D navigational imaging. In the procedure, endoscopic equipment with high resolution cameras and screens are used to open the natural sinuses and remove the unhealthy tissue. This will allow the sinuses to function better and decrease the risk of sinus infections.
If you have recurrent sinus infections, please call the office today for a consultation with Dr. Archer, a double board certified facial plastic surgeon and ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgeon.
